Let’s talk about Jailbreaking Kodi onto the Amazon Firestick! Hey there, John and Jerry here! If you are reading this article, you probably have cut the cord to cable, or are getting close. Maybe you bought an Amazon Firestick and you are using it, when one day, when you’re walking down a dark alley and suddenly, there’s this guy with a fedora under a streetlight. He gestures with a upward nod of his head and says “Hey you”. “Me? “ “Yeah you, C’mere. Have you ever heard of (say in a whisper) jailbreaking your Amazon Firestick?” “Uh, no sir, I didn’t even know my Firestick was in trouble!” So, first of all, what the heck are you doing walking down a dark alley by yourself? Secondly, this Jailbreaking thing sounds so mysterious and forbidden! Do you want to hear something crazy? By the end of this article, you will understand this sentence: “You now have your first add on to your Kodi that you jailbroke onto your Amazon Firestick!” Sounds incredibly complex and jardon-y, but don’t worry, John and Jerry are here! We will help you every step of the way! To start we will attempt to answer the questions you may not know you have been asking:
- What is jailbreaking?
- Is it worth it?
- Is it legal?
- Is it difficult to install?
What does Jailbreaking Kodi onto an Amazon Firestick even mean?
The Amazon Firestick is a media streaming device that connects to your television and allows you access to subscription streaming services as well as lots of free content. LOTS of content. Jailbreaking is simply installing third party apps not originally loaded on your device that allow you access to EVEN MORE CONTENT.
Is it worth it?
Maybe you want to stop right there. Ask yourself, do you really need more content? John and Jerry did Jailbreak their Amazon Firestick, and will show you how to do it, step by step, but at the end of the day, we honestly have so much content that we don’t use the Jailbroke stuff that often. By the way, jailbreaking is also called side-loading and unlocking a device. They all mean the same thing. To jailbreak, you load a very powerful app called Kodi onto your Amazon Firestick that allows you to do several things, like store all of your media in various formats all in one place, and install other apps that can get you more content. That is all jailbreaking is–loading some software onto your Amazon Firestick. We will take you through the simple steps to do this later in the article. Right now, we’ll talk more about Kodi.
The most popular third-party app that is loaded onto an Amazon Firestick is something called Kodi. If you’re interested in a little bit of history, Kodi was originally created for the X Box, which is why if you are searching for options for cutting the cable cord, you sometimes will see things like Firestick and Kodi, and also once in while you’ll see XBMC, which stands for X Box Media Center. It used to just work through X Box, but now called Kodi, and can work through any television.
Once you have purchased an Amazon FireStick, you can have Kodi downloaded in the steps listed below. If you are scared to death of this kind of stuff, have heart! There are a finite number of steps, and it is fairly self-explanatory, but if you still have doubts, there are dozens of You Tube videos that show you step by step with screen shots how to do this. One of our favorites is
Is it legal?
Before we begin, let’s answer this question. Is it legal to download Kodi to your Fire Stick? Unequivocally—yes. Strictly speaking, it depends on how you use the device. The thing is, once you have Kodi downloaded to your Amazon Firestick, you have many apps that you will have the option to download. Some of these apps give you access to illegal content. That part is not legal, and never will be. We do not suggest you download these apps or this content.
Is it difficult to install?
Listen, for John, jailbreaking a Firestick is a walk in the park. He can jailbreak a firestick with salsa and a car battery like they did on Mythbusters. Is it not difficult for the John’s of the world. Nope. Is it difficult for the Jerry’s of the world? No, but…you have to be patient and not get overwhelmed. Take your time, don’t get frustrated, stop for cheesecake at least once to calm your nerves. We go step by step, and you’ll be fine.

Warning! Exciting BONUS content!!
You can stop now, or you can go further down the rabbit hole! Read on if you want to know how to protect your privacy when viewing tv and working on the computer and how to use Kodi to connect to a really cool app that will give you access to tons of movies and tv shows.
What is a VPN, and do I need one?
John and Jerry both have security on their computers that they use for home and for work. Something like Kaspersky Total Security seems essential to ward of hackers and to keep viruses out of our computers. Now that you have cut the cord to cable, all of your viewing activity is through the internet, and therefore is potentially able to be seen by anyone. Now, Jerry does not understand this at a technical level, but John does. But Jerry thinks, well, I don’t really want someone being able to look at my viewing history. So what if I am a middle-aged guy who has binge-watched all of the seasons of Gilmore Girls–twice. Just like if I’m on an airplane reading a magazine, I don’t necessarily want someone walking by looking over my shoulder and see me pouring intently over the Sexiest Man Alive article. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just my business!
How do I keep my privacy?
By installing something called a VPN, or Virtual Private Network. There are several of these VPN services available. We do not have a specific recommendation for one, just do a google search. They all have a charge per month, but it may be worth the cost. You will have privacy, security and an added bonus. You will be able to connect to servers all over the world. You can do that now, but it will connect you like you are coming from outside the country. With a VPN, it will be like you are actually in the country.
Of course, a VPN is loaded onto your computer. It will hide your viewing, but also adds a layer of security to all of your work you do over the internet. A VPN takes all of your information and encrypts it before sending or receiving any information. This may also be useful to those of us who work from home and have access to company computers.
Downloading a Kodi app
Now that you have Kodi, you can download some apps to get you access to more programs. You won’t believe how many apps you could potentially get for Kodi. Never fear, John and Jerry are constantly watching to see which ones are performing the best. Just like peeing outdoors on a windy day, we want you to get your feet wet. We will show you how to install just one app. This one happens to be our top pick as of this writing. It is called Neptune Rising. We used to recommend two other apps: Exodus and Covenant, but Neptune Rising is, in our opinion, better organized, can get you movies and tv shows in 1080p and HD quality, is easy to navigate and search, and even has in-theater movies available.
Installing Neptune Rising on your Kodi
First, get a cup of coffee, shut off your phone, get into your most favorite stretchy pants (remember the rule, wear nothing with a zipper!) and if you so desire, open up a cold craft beer to enjoy. If you have never done this before, some of this seems crazy, but take your time, don’t worry, this won’t take too long, but we don’t want you stressed! You can do this without having a VPN (Virtual Private Network) installed, but we do recommend it for your protection.
Step 1: Turn on your tv and open the Amazon Firestick
Step 2: Using the large round navigation button, scroll all the way over to the left side of the screen, then scroll down to select Settings.
Step 3: Scroll over and click on System Settings
Step 4: Click on Add-ons
Step 5: Click on Unknown Sources to turn it on.
Before you go on, you need to first download something called a zip file that contains the Neptune app. We told you, if this is new, this sounds crazy. A zip file is just like a travel case for cosmetics. It’s only one item, but if you unzip it, there are a bunch of smaller things inside A zip file is just like that.
Step 5: Go back to the Kodi home screen. Click on the settings button on Kodi. This is the one that looks like a cog wheel.
Step 6: Open file manager and double click on Add Source
Step 7: This is the part that gets a little tricky. Let’s just break it down. When you click on Add Source, a pop up box will appear. Click on None.
Step 8: In the long rectangular box, type this exactly:
This is telling Kodi where to go on the internet for the zip file.
Step 9: Click OK
Step 10: Next, In the box that says Enter a name for this media source, type in the word freeworld. This is the name of the place where the zip file is located.
Step 11: Click OK.
Step 12: Using the large round navigation button, go back to the Kodi home creen and click on Add-ons towards the bottom of the left hand side.
Step 13: You may want to take a break. Get up, move around, get another craft beer. When you are back in your relaxed, Zen state, continue on!
Step 14: Click on the icon in the upper left hand corner that looks like an open box.
Step 15: Click on Install from Zip file
Step 16: Scroll down and select freeworld.
Step 17: When the next screen comes up, click on
Step 18: Click on Install from zip file
Wait for a few minutes, and the message Mr. Freeworld Add on installed will pop up, letting you know that your zip file has been opened.
Step 19: Open Install from Repository
Step 20: Click on Mr. Freeworld.
Step 21: Scroll down and open the Video add ons file
Step 22: Select Mr. Freeworld
Step 23: Select Neptune Rising
Step 24: Click on install on the bottom right corner. It has the icon of a cloud with an arrow pointing down.
That’s it! Do you remember that crazy sentence from the beginning of the article? Well, maybe it makes a little more sense now that You now have your first add on to your Kodi that you jailbroke onto your Amazon Firestick! How’s that for a lot of jargon! Whoo Whoo! Now start playing around and have fun!
